Some highlights from the Yucatan – all types of Mexican culture, history and natural splendour is waiting to be discovered.  Distances can be long, so check timings!  The world famous Chichen Itza Maya site is a spectacular ‘must see’ and is possible in a day trip – but an overnight stay at a nearby hotel makes for a more comfortable and rewarding trip.  It is possible to stay in the colonial town of Valladolid and then visit Chichen Itza early morning to avoid most of the crowds.  There are also many other fantastic Mayan sites that are closer – Tulum, Coba, Muyil, Ek Balem.

Coba – Mayan site about 2 hours from Playa
One of the numerous cenotes – this one is at Ek Balem, but there are many similar ones very close to Playa
Muyil – a quiet Mayan site just south of Tulum
Weekends in Merida – for fantastic Mexican music and dance
Historic Merida – a direct luxury bus service with ADO is an easy option for transport
Punta Laguna, a small village close to Coba – local guides will tell you all about modern Mayan culture and it is possible to see spider monkeys
At Punta Laguna it is common to see spider monkeys, but on one recent visit we were lucky enough to see these howler monkeys
Relaxing and beautiful Bacalar
Ek Balem – a mayan site very close to the beautiful colonial town of Valadolid
Uxmal – famous mayan site south of Merida, enjoy this spectacular and unique site with few other visitors
RM - Progresso
Progresso – the closest beach to Merida and crowded at the weekend, but quiet during the week. Fresh breeze is usual
