What’s On



There are many events in the Riviera Maya and here are some that may be of interest.  As dates can change, we suggest that you also check with the event website before making specific travel plans based on any one event.  There are regular cultural events at the Teatro de la Ciudad.

May 17 – 18 – Travesía Sagrada Maya Re-enactment of the ancient sacred mayan crossing to Cozumel in traditional canoes. From Playa and Xcaret

September 16 – Mexican Independence Day

Autumn Equinox – Chichen Itza – shadow of the equinox

Dia de los Muertos – November 1 and 2.  In the Riviera Maya, this is largely a family tradition.  However, there is usually a parade of catrinas along 5th Avenue on the Saturday evening before November 1 (around 6.00pm).  This is followed by a music and dance performance in the Municipal square downtown.  There will be various altars in the centre of Playa del Carmen the evening show at Xcaret is an excellent event for tourists who wish to learn about this part of Mexican culture 099a

November 11 – 17 2019 – PGA Golf Tournament at Mayakoba.  The major golf tournament on Riviera Maya

Early November – Film festival

Riviera Maya Jazz Festival –  November  for 3 days

Carnival – February 21 – 26 2020 – it may be smaller than Rio, but has a great atmosphere.  Check local posts for the exact route.  There route starts in Constityentes and ends at the new Municipality building near CTM.  The Cozumel carnival is also easy to visit – catch the ferry to see this carnival procession as well. The Cozumel carnival route is along the sea front by the ferry dock during the evening.playa-del-carmen-carnival
